Gemini Saree Photo Prompt: 3 Karnataka Saree Looks (Tested)

Saree photos are where AI image tools slip up most. The fabric looks like plastic, the pallu goes missing, and every saree turns into the same red-and-gold Kanjivaram. After a week of trying, I wrote a Gemini saree photo prompt formula built around real Karnataka weaves, and I ran three versions to show you what comes out.

The prompts also work in ChatGPT. What matters is the wording, not the app.

Why a Gemini saree photo prompt fails with vague words

If you type “woman in a beautiful saree”, the model averages everything it has seen. You get shiny, heavy, bridal-looking silk, whatever the occasion. Three things go wrong again and again:

  • Fabric: “silk” alone gives a satin look. Cotton, handloom and Ilkal-type weaves need their own words.
  • Drape: the pallu falls straight down like a curtain unless you say how it sits.
  • Border and colour: “gold border” is read as “very wide, very shiny”. Naming the shade and the width stops that.

So I describe the saree the way I would to a tailor: fabric, colour, border, pallu, blouse.

The five-part saree prompt formula

  1. Keep the face. First sentence, always. I explained why in my post on keeping the face same in Gemini.
  2. The saree: weave, colour, border width, pallu design.
  3. Styling: blouse colour, jewellery, flowers, bindi.
  4. Place and light: one location, one time of day.
  5. Camera: lens feel, depth of field, “natural skin texture”, aspect ratio, “no text”.

Google’s own advice for editing photos is the same idea: say what changes, then say what stays. Their official Gemini image editing tips are short and worth a read.

Prompt 1: Ilkal saree in a North Karnataka courtyard

Ilkal sarees come from the Bagalkot district and are known for a contrast pallu, usually white or cream against a deep body colour. Most AI tools have barely seen them, so you must describe them.

Upload a bright, front-facing photo, then paste:

Keep my face, hairstyle and skin tone exactly the same as the uploaded photo. Dress me in a maroon handloom cotton-silk Ilkal saree with a narrow red border and a cream pallu with white woven bird and temple motifs. Simple gold chain, red and gold bangles, small gold studs. Stand me in the courtyard of a traditional North Karnataka stone house with a tulsi katte behind me, soft morning light, shallow depth of field, natural skin texture, 4:5 portrait. No text, no watermark.

The pallu came out well on the first try, and the stone and tulsi katte look believable. When I removed the words “white woven bird and temple motifs”, the pallu turned plain. Those details matter.

Prompt 2: Mysore silk saree in a lamp-lit temple corridor

This is the festival look: Karthika masa evenings, Deepotsava, or a profile photo with warmth.

Keep my face, hairstyle and skin tone exactly the same. Dress me in a bottle-green Mysore silk saree with a wide gold zari border, matching blouse, a string of jasmine in my hair and gold jhumkas. I walk barefoot through a carved stone temple corridor at dusk, holding a small brass lamp, rows of oil lamps glowing along the pillars. Warm light, shallow depth of field, candid smile, natural skin, no text.

The word “barefoot” is practical. Temples are shoe-free, and without it the model sometimes added sandals. “Candid smile” also removed the stiff, posed face that I got in earlier runs.

Prompt 3: Cotton saree on a rainy morning

Not every saree photo needs a festival. This one is for everyday posts and Instagram carousels.

Keep my face, hair and skin tone exactly the same. Dress me in a simple mustard-yellow handloom cotton saree with a thin black border and a black blouse. I sit by a wooden window on a rainy morning with a steel tumbler of filter coffee, a string of jasmine on the table. Soft overcast light, natural skin texture, slight film grain, 4:5, no text.

“Handloom cotton” is what gives the soft, crinkled fabric. In my first run I wrote only “cotton saree” and got something stiff.

How I test one change at a time

This is the part that saved me the most time. When a result is off, I never rewrite the whole prompt. I copy the same prompt, change exactly one phrase, and run it again. Then I compare the two images side by side.

Here is what I learned that way:

  • Colour names: “bottle green” and “emerald” give clearly different greens. “Green” alone drifts towards parrot green.
  • Light: “soft morning light” keeps the zari from glaring. “Golden hour” makes the gold border almost orange.
  • Flowers: jasmine in the hair sits better when you say “a short string of jasmine” rather than “flowers”, which gave me a huge bun of roses.
  • Aspect ratio: 4:5 shows the whole saree from shoulder to feet. A square crop cuts the border at the bottom.

Keep a note on your phone of every phrase that worked. After ten or so runs you will have your own saree prompt library, and it will beat any copied list.

One more habit: save the best result as the reference for the next edit. Upload it back and say “keep this saree exactly, change only the background to a lotus pond”. Gemini holds the saree far better when it can see it than when you describe it again.

Fixes when the saree looks wrong

ProblemWhat to add
Fabric looks like plastic“matte handloom texture, visible weave, natural creases”
Pallu missing or flat“pallu pinned on the left shoulder, falling in soft folds”
Border too heavy“narrow 2 cm border” instead of “gold border”
Face changedRe-upload the original and repeat the keep-face line first
Skin too smooth“natural skin texture, no retouching”

Common mistakes

  1. Naming no weave. “Silk saree” is a coin toss. Say Mysore silk, Ilkal or handloom cotton.
  2. Stacking locations. A temple, a beach and a palace in one prompt gives a collage. Choose one.
  3. Asking for text. Captions get misspelt. Add them later, as I covered in Kannada text on AI images.
  4. Using a dark selfie. The output copies the weak light. Use a bright, straight photo.
  5. Believing the weave is exact. The AI imitates the look, it is not a real Ilkal pattern. Do not present it as one if you sell sarees.

Wrap-up

A good Gemini saree photo prompt is mostly honest description. Describe the saree like a tailor, keep the face line first, and choose one place and one light. FAQ

Which is better for saree photos, Gemini or ChatGPT?

I only tested the prompts above in Gemini. They are plain English and will work in ChatGPT too, but I will not claim one is better.

Will the saree match a real Ilkal or Mysore silk design?

No. You get the look, not an authentic pattern. Treat it as a creative photo.

How do I keep my face accurate?

Start the prompt with “keep my face, hairstyle and skin tone exactly the same” and upload a bright, front-facing photo.

Can I change only the saree colour afterwards?

Yes. Reply in the same chat: “Change only the saree colour to deep blue. Keep everything else identical.”
